I've noticed that one of the patterns in Surrealist painting is the use of the sky and/or the ocean/and or an expansive landscape as the backdrop for the psyche. This makes a lot of sense to me in the context of what we've talked about in class, a kind of psychological spacial framework for image-making. A vast unknown frontier aching to be filled with images. The expanse is what evokes a feeling of discomfort in me when I look at a lot of Surrealist painting. I've also noticed a lot of surrealist painting includes eyes, mouths, bodies and other body parts. It seems like we can understand our bodies as broken up fragments, abstract ideas, disconnected from physical reality and floating around in our dream space. Its like they are keys to our unconscious that evade us but are always present as actors or observers in our dream worlds.
